先日ICSAF2017と第34回JSSA先端芸術音楽創作学会研究会への参加しますという内容の記事を書きましたが、無事参加を終え現在大垣に戻る新幹線の車内です。で、今日はそこで発表したIAMASでの修士作品についてICSAF2017で公開した範囲での公開と、来年の2月に行なわれる卒展”IAMAS2018”で作品を再演するにあたってのクラウドファンディングのお願いの記事を書きます。

修士作品について

2年間IAMASに修士号(メディア表現)を目指して研究に勤しんでましたが、先月作品審査を終え無事作品については合格することができました。いろいろな方の助力やアドバイスの中で進められたことなのでまず関係者のみなさんに感謝します。僕の作品は”Music for multilayered temporal structures”という作品で、これは簡単に言うと楽譜と指示書、という冊子の音楽作品です。この冊子には練習曲という位置付けで3曲リードシートの形で曲が収められていますが、まずは作品の中の曲のうち2曲(“Etude #1”と”Etude #2”という曲)を実際にミュージシャンが演奏した内容を紹介します。それでは下記の映像をどうぞご覧下さい。ドラム：よしじまともひと、ベース：川本悠自、ピアノ：金子将昭、のピアノトリオによる演奏です。

この曲を演奏するにあたっては先に書いたように「楽譜と指示書」というものをミュージシャンに渡して演奏をしてもらっています。その指示書、つまり「作品本体」ですがそれはこちらからダウンロード出来ます。

他にも途中で作っていた習作が面白いのですが、それはまたの機会に。

どのような作品なのか?

で、この作品がどのような作品なのか? について簡単に説明します。

ものすごく簡単に言ってしまうと「異なるBPMの4拍子を複層させている音楽」です。詳しい説明は第34回JSSA先端芸術音楽創作学会研究会にて発表した研究報告多層時間構造による音楽創造の試みとその身体化の可能性があるので、そちらに譲りますが、僕がIAMASで研究の動機としていたのは菊地さんの私塾「ペンギン音楽大学」の大学院のブラックミュージック研究のコースでやっていた「ポリリズム/クロスリズム」を発展的に研究できないか? というものでした。

その中で紆余曲折して生れたのが「多層時間構造による音楽」という方法で、簡単に言うと「ある一拍を基準としたn拍を4拍子化して複層する」というものです。これは特徴として次の二点が特徴で、、、

  • 1拍が共有されていない
  • その1拍をn拍したものを4拍子化(4連化)するので、小節線も共有されず周りこむ
  • だけど元の泊の長さ換算での最小公倍数(4拍4拍子と5拍4拍子なら21拍目)の小節の頭で揃う

という構造を持っています。とにかく方法はシンプルです。が、演奏するのはかなり難儀です。なにせ一定のビートで演奏されていないので。ちなみに上の動画ではミュージシャンはクリックを聞いていません。自分の力でそれぞれの拍を作って演奏しています。

今後、この作品についてはここまでの過程で作ったものを公開していくつもりで来年の卒展で展示したいと思っていますので、是非来年の2月22日から2月25日に開催される卒展”情報科学芸術大学院大学 第16期生修了研究発表会・プロジェクト研究発表会 IAMAS2018“にご来場ください。

クラウドファンディングのお願い

その卒展では自主企画のイベントとして上記の動画のドラムとベースを呼んで今度は僕もギターを弾いてギタートリオで再演しようと思っています。それにあたってリハ、ミュージシャンの移動費、などをクラウドファンディングさせて頂ければと思い、クラウドファンディングという形でみなさんのご協力を仰ぎたいと思っています。もちろんまったくお金が集らななくても決行しますので心配しないでください。それは大丈夫。とはいえ「研究の最大化」を目指して上記の動画を作るにあたってかなり出費してしまい、ご支援いただけるなら本当に助かる、というのが正直なところでもあります。

I previously wrote about participating in ICSAF2017 and the 34th JSSA Research Meeting, and I’m happy to report that the presentation went well. I’m currently on the Shinkansen heading back to Ogaki. Today, I’d like to share my master’s works from IAMAS (to the extent presented at ICSAF2017) and make a crowdfunding request for the re-performance at the graduation exhibition “IAMAS2018” in February next year.

About My Master’s Works

After two years of research at IAMAS working toward a master’s degree (in Media Expression), I passed the work examination last month. I’m grateful to everyone who helped and advised me along the way. My work is called “Music for multilayered temporal structures” – essentially a booklet containing scores and instructions as a musical work. The booklet includes three pieces in lead sheet format positioned as etudes. Here, I’d like to introduce two of them (“Etude #1” and “Etude #2”) as actually performed by musicians. Please watch the video below – a piano trio performance with Tomohito Yoshijima on drums, Yuji Kawamoto on bass, and Masaaki Kaneko on piano.

What Kind of Work Is It?

Let me briefly explain what this work is about.

Put very simply, it’s “music that layers 4/4 time signatures at different tempos.” For a detailed explanation, please refer to the research report Attempt to Create Music with Multilayered Temporal Structures and Possibility of Embodiments presented at the 34th JSSA Research Meeting. My research motivation at IAMAS was to explore whether the “polyrhythm/cross-rhythm” studies from Naruyoshi Kikuchi’s private school “Penguin Music College” graduate course in Black Music could be developed further.

Through various twists and turns, I arrived at a method called “music with multilayered temporal structures.” Simply put, it involves “taking n beats based on a single beat unit, converting them to 4/4 time, and layering them.” Its key characteristics are:

  • The beat units are not shared between layers
  • Since n beats are converted to groups of 4, bar lines are also not shared and wrap around
  • However, the layers align at the least common multiple measured in the original beat length (e.g., the 21st beat for 4-beat and 5-beat 4/4 layers)

The method itself is simple, but performing it is quite challenging since there’s no steady shared beat. In the video above, the musicians are not listening to a click track – they’re maintaining their own beats through their own ability.

At the graduation exhibition, I’m planning a self-organized event where I’ll invite the drummer and bassist from the video above, and this time I’ll also play guitar for a guitar trio re-performance. I’m seeking crowdfunding support for rehearsal costs, musicians’ travel expenses, and other costs. Of course, the performance will happen regardless of how much funding is raised, so please don’t worry about that. However, I spent quite a bit on producing the video above in pursuit of “maximizing the research,” so any support would honestly be a great help.
